We can help right from the moment you are told your child is being transferred. In four areas of St. Joseph's Hospital, there are funds made available through Y.A.N.A. that any parent of a child being transferred for care is eligible. The fund consists of $100.00 to enable the parent to find accommodation, food and possibly even a toothbrush without the worry of money. The first day can be a very hectic day and we hope to alleviate some of the pressure.
At Children's Hospital, Y.A.N.A. can also help. Y.A.N.A. has funds on hand for families of the Comox Valley and School District No. 71 who are not receiving Government assistance, to help with their needs while away from home. This fund is under the care of the Human Resources Dept. at Children's Hospital and is constantly replenished. For more information, contact the human resource worker assigned to your ward, and they will help you in any way possible.
You must wonder why funding is necessary for these families. Unfortunately, there is no help in this area of health care for the working person. If you are low income, funds are available through Human Resources. A working person has difficulty keeping up with these mounting costs.
Y.A.N.A. rents three apartments in Vancouver for the use of Comox Valley families of sick children. The apartments offer the family the comfort and privacy so often needed during a time of crisis. If the apartments are in use, Y.A.N.A. utilizes the facilities of Easter Seal, Ronald McDonald and Heather House.
When Y.A.N.A. is notified we will meet with the family and fill out the appropriate forms at their earliest possible convenience. Our application form is realistic, and designed by people who have an understanding of what the family is going through. When this is complete, we can offer assistance for the family within 24 hours. Although there is no obligation for repayment, we are always in desperate need of volunteers, and we encourage the families to give back through volunteering for Y.A.N.A. Every family's confidentiality is strictly adhered to and we offer no medical advice.
